For over 30 years Pastor Berry has been working in the ministry. For several of those years he has served here in Skowhegan, Maine as pastor. In 2008, he began the Shelters By Jesus ministry and travels the country to raise awareness of the homelessness crisis within our nation. He is senior pastor and founder, here at the shelter and continues to serve the Lord right along side his wife Selma.
He has authored 4 books sharing the miracles, trials, and experiences in maintaining this ministry through the power and grace of God. His heart for the homeless is matched only by his determination to see the poor brought to Christ as their Savior. If you would like Pastor Berry to visit your church and share in the miracles that God is doing with the shelter or to encourage you to step out in faith and care for those in your own community, or if you are already serving those in need and simply want us to pray, you can contact us and schedule a visit.

I have been involved in Ministry since 1986 as a Youth Pastor for my Pastor and Mentor. We have been partners with SBJ Skowhegan and SBJ Lewiston since 2015. This involvement has changed our church family and life. I am honored to be a Board Member for SBJ Skowhegan. We have a food bank ministry at North Monmouth Community Church; this allows us to provide food and various sundries for BOTH SBJ campuses. We have also partnered with 3 other local food banks, and 3 homeless shelters. ALL because GOD put Pastor Berry and I together thru some very unique circumstances. I have been ministering for over 30 years, and this partnership has been a HUGE blessing to our church and our church family.

It's real simple....we have two qualifications for serving on our board:
1) You have a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior.
2) You share our vision of spreading the gospel through this ministry.
Seth has been with the shelter as director now for three years and brings a great deal of experience in people management, project oversite, planning and development. He brings with him years of military experience, and a great love for Jesus, people, and the gospel. Seth is accompanied by his wife Tia, and daughter Morgana.
Al has been a long time elder at the church and has been serving there for 13+ years. His compassion for others and ability to handle the word of God make him exceptionally qualified for this position. Not only is Al the co-host of our podcast but additionally serves as pastor for Sunday morning services.
Gary has been a long time member and serves as an elder within the SBJ church. Gary is a graduate of bible college and serves as our director of education ensuring that God's word is handled correctly and preached within biblical authority. He also oversees our teachers who share the word throughout the week.
Peter has been an elder in the church and director of worship music for over a decade. His heart is to lead us in worship as we prepare to hear the word of God. Peter's love for God and for the people at SBJ is evident in the opportunities and guidance he freely gives.
This homeless shelter is mostly staffed by our homeless people. WHAT? You read correctly! Many of the folks who have walked in through the doors of this shelter and having nothing, are actually assisting with managing this place! Many have lost jobs, lost their homes and yet have found a new lease on life by entering into this shelter; finding purpose and wholeness by giving of themselves to the mission and vision of the organization.
This shelter, located Skowhegan, Maine, could be a template for other churches to follow. The somewhat unorthodox method of having the residents help to maintain the facility and establish it by feeding, clothing and helping others to find gainful employment is nothing short of miraculous...and it works! The staff (residents) get room and board for their positions. They work in the office, the food pantry, the laundry, maintenance, yard work, supply, and the kitchen. They fire up the wood boiler and do any necessary chores; all requirements for an on-going operation, so that when the next needy soul shows up at the door, there is shelter from the storm!
